Why is my house like this? Airflow & ductwork

Why one room is never the right temperature

The bedroom over the garage, the back office, the room nobody uses in winter — the causes are measurable.

“Every other room is fine. This one has never been right.”

It is usually distribution, not capacity

If most of the house is comfortable and one or two rooms are not, the equipment is generally producing enough heating or cooling. The problem is that the right amount of it is not arriving in that room.

That is a distribution problem, and distribution problems are measurable: how much air is leaving that register, how much that room needs, and where the difference went.

The usual causes

  • A starved return — plenty of supply air pushed in, nowhere for it to leave, so flow stalls
  • A duct run that is too long, too narrow, or has too many turns for the air it must carry
  • A crushed, disconnected, or badly sealed flex duct in a space nobody inspects
  • Supply air lost to an unconditioned attic, crawlspace or garage before it arrives
  • A room load the original design never accounted for — a converted space, an addition, new glazing
  • A system balanced for the house as it was, not as it is now

Why closing vents elsewhere makes it worse

Closing registers in comfortable rooms to force air into the problem room raises static pressure across the whole system. Total airflow drops, and the room you were trying to help often gets less air, not more — while everything else works harder.

It feels like a free fix. It is the opposite.

What a diagnosis should produce

A number for what that room is getting, a number for what it needs, and an identified place where the difference is being lost. Then a correction aimed at that place, and a second measurement showing the gap closed.

On a Highland Park job, the pressure was being lost on the return side and across the filter, and the system was moving 1,200 CFM where it needed 1,500. Adding a return in the basement and changing the fitting by the furnace brought static pressure from 1.17 to 0.68.
